New Telephone Line Connections

There are generally three types of new telephone connections: PSTN, ISDN2 and ISDN10/20/30. We shall examine only these three types on this webpage.

First, let's examine the types of installations which are likely - from taking over existing services and changing the billing name, to completely first-time installations into a premises.

Telephone Line Connection Types

There are five different scenarios which will define the 'lead time' for connection of these services.  These will be listed from fastest to slowest:
1.  Active Lines

The lines are active and your business will be taking over ownership of those lines.  The numbers will not change.  There will be a necessity to complete a Change of Ownership or Change of Lessee form.  There will be no down-time on the phone lines.
(This connection may not be considered to be a 'Connection' by some.  It is included here for complete-ness.)
2.  Recently Active Lines

The lines were recently active and your business will be using the same physical connections.  The numbers will change; you will be assigned new numbers.  The connection will take only 3 working days - in most cases.  The lines will be active for voice, but must be 'coded' for ADSL connections (a further 3-5 days plus 4-10 days for Internet account creation and implementation).
3.  Deactivated Lines

The physical connections are still in place, but the line is no longer connected properly to the local telephone exchange.  (If the line has no dial tone, this is likely the case.)  You will be allocated new phone numbers to each line.  Due to the need for a technician's visit, there will be a lead time of around 5 working days - in most cases.  At this time the lines will be active for voice usage, but must be 'coded' for ADSL connections (a further 3-5 days plus 5-10 days for Internet account creation and implementation).
Telephone technicians often need to visit your business premises to install or reconnect new telephone services.  Please ensure that the technician has full access to your office and to the MDF (Main Distribution Frame) - where the phone lines enter the building.
4.  No Lines Present

There are no 'sockets' or other physical connections.  There will need to be new connections made.  New phone numbers will be allocated.  Due to the need for a technician's visit, there will be a lead time of around 5 working days - in most cases.  (If the business owner is not having a telephone systems installer or electrician terminate the lines to sockets, then the organising Telco should be informed.  After this time the lines will be active for voice usage, but must be 'coded' for ADSL connections (a further 3-5 days plus 4-10 days for Internet account creation and implementation).
5.  No Lines to the Premises

Sometimes all the available phone lines into a building are in use.  At this point the Telco's technician will be required to bring in more copper-pair lines to the premises.  Often this requires a new trench to be dug (at the expense of the building owner) in order to lay the copper lines from the street to the building.  Afterwards, installation can progress as Scenario 4, above.

The above types of installations are all common to PSTN, ISDN2 and ISDN10/20/30 services.  Installation timeframes increase with complexity.

The fastest installation is a simple PSTN installation, with new phone numbers.
                                                       Estimate: 5 days.

The slowest installation would be an ISDN10/20/30, while porting numbers from another provider and installing new copper lines into the premises.
Up to 90 days could be expected.

ISDN2 Services

Installation costs of ISDN2 services are typically higher than PSTN installations, however service charges are usually slightly lower than those of PSTN services.

Note: Aussie Phone Brokers does not recommend new ISDN2 services.

 Connection Type
ISDN2 Connection Cost
  1.  New Connection

$324.50

  2.  Conversion of PSTN to ISDN2

$190.30

ISDN10/20/30 Services

Installation costs of ISDN10/20/30 services are quite complex.  (There are up to 30 telephone lines travelling over one copper line.)  For this reason, ISDN PRI installations are typically expensive.  (Over several thousand dollars in some cases.)  And installation costs vary widely between providers.

In almost every case, there are free installation costs with certain providers on certain plans.

Fastest Connection of New Lines

PSTN Services

    ('traditional' phone lines)

The fastest way to get a connection is direct with Telstra.  The steps below outline the best approach.

 Step No.
Action
  1.

Call Telstra on 132 000, and say "New Connections", then "Business"

  2.

Ask the operator for PSTN lines, on the BusinessLine Complete plan.

  3.

Inform the operator of any line features, such as Line Hunt or MessageBank.

  4.

Inform the operator of any lines which will be used for ADSL connections.

  5.

Ask for an ASAP installation.  Ask the operator to note this.

  6.

If you need installation to sockets, make sure this is noted also.
Be aware of any works the Telstra technician will not be completing.

  7.

Get a Reference Number!

  8.

Ensure site access for the Telstra technician.
If you are not there, the Tech will leave - without hesitation.

  9.

Examine what plans and what provider are really suitable for your business.

Best Landline Phone Plans

New Telephone Connections

There are several loose criteria which Aussie Phone Brokers use to establish the best landline phone plans for each client.  Monthly spend, number of lines, current telephone system capabilities and location are just some of the common elements which can indicate which plans are suitable or unsuitable for your business.

Three General Categories of Business

Small & Micro Businesses

Loosely speaking, if your landline account is likely to be below $800 per month or if you will have 5 or less lines, then the Best Landline Phone plans for your business can be found here.

Large & Corporate Businesses

At the other end of the spectrum:
If your monthly account is likely to be above $3000, or if you will have 12 or more landlines in operation, then you will probably be a candidate for ISDN10/20/30 services.
Please contact us on 1300 733 565 or via Enquiries

Medium-sized Businesses

In the middle of the two:
If the monthly account is likely to be between $800 and $3000 per month, or if there will likely be between 6 and 12 landlines in operation, then many other considerations come into effect.  An Aussie Phone Brokers consultant will have to step through a series of scenarios to establish your business's best options.
